Autumn, Rain and Hair Extensions: 7 Mistakes to Avoid
Autumn changes not only the weather, but also the way our hair behaves. Rain, humidity, wind, scarves and the frequent switch from cold outdoors to warm indoor spaces can make hair harder to manage.
With hair extensions, this is felt even more. Longer hair comes into more contact with clothing and tangles more easily, and when it's wet or damp, we need to be more careful when combing and drying it.
This doesn't mean, however, that in autumn we need to put in twice the effort. It's more about knowing which habits can cause problems and avoiding them.
1. We go out with wet hair
In the warmer months, we may not pay as much attention to whether our hair is completely dry before we leave the house. In autumn, however, this isn't the best habit.
Wet hair is more vulnerable to mechanical stress, and when wind, scarves, collars and hoods are added to the mix, tangling can appear much faster.
With extensions, this is especially important because of the added length.
That's why, when it's cold and damp outside, let your hair dry well before you go out. It doesn't have to be perfectly styled – what matters is that it isn't left wet at the roots and along the lengths.
If you wear clip-in hair, you have one more option – put it in right before you leave, when your natural hair is already completely dry.
2. We let our hair constantly rub against our clothes
Scarves, high collars, hoods and coats are an almost unavoidable part of autumn. The problem isn't the clothes themselves, but the constant friction between them and the hair.
Especially with long extensions, the area around the neck and shoulders can tangle faster.
That's why, on days when you know you'll be outside for a long time, pay attention to how you wear your hair. A loose braid or a low, not-too-tight hairstyle can limit movement and friction.
Avoid overly tight ponytails and buns, especially if the hair is already damp.
3. We comb right after the rain
If our hair has been soaked by the rain, our first reaction is often to comb it to quickly get it back in shape.
It's better not to rush.
When hair is wet and already has knots, combing forcefully can put strain on both the natural hair and the areas where the extensions are attached.
First, gently pat the hair dry. Then, if it needs combing, start from the ends and gradually work your way up.
With long extensions, dividing the hair into several sections also makes the process easier.
4. We put damp hair up and leave it that way
Sometimes after a rainy day we simply don't have the patience to deal with our hair. We tie it up, let it dry on its own and carry on with the rest of the day.
That's exactly when a small tangle can gradually become a more serious one.
If your hair is wet, don't leave it tied up tightly for a long time. Give it a chance to dry well, paying special attention to the attachment area for permanently attached extensions.
At the end of the day, it's best for your hair to be dry and gently combed before you go to bed.
5. We try to control humidity with too many products
Humid weather can change the way hair looks. It can become fluffier, lose its smoothness or show more flyaways.
This easily tempts us to reach for a little more oil, serum or styling product.
But there's no need to add product after product.
With extensions, too much product can weigh the hair down and change its natural look. That's why you should use a moderate amount and follow the instructions for the specific product.
With permanently attached extensions, also be careful when applying products around the attachment areas. Heavy or oily products shouldn't get there, unless they're suitable for the specific method.
6. We let small knots build up
This is a mistake that often isn't noticed right away.
A single small knot doesn't look like a serious problem. After a few days, however, several such spots can turn into a densely tangled area.
In autumn, pay more attention to the places that constantly touch your clothes – mainly around the neck, shoulders and ends.
You don't need to spend a long time in front of the mirror. What matters more is not letting the tangling build up.
If you come across a knot, don't pull the brush through it. Separate a small section and untangle it gradually, starting from the ends.
7. We use the same routine regardless of the weather
Not every autumn day requires the same care.
In dry, calm weather, there may be no need to change your usual routine at all. In strong wind, however, the hair will have more contact with your clothes. In rain, you need to pay attention to drying, and in the drier air of heated rooms, you may notice a change in the feel of the lengths and ends.
That's why, instead of adding many new steps to your care, simply observe how your hair reacts and adjust the small things according to the situation.
What should we do if our extensions get wet in the rain?
There's no need for special measures just because your hair got caught in the rain.
If it's slightly wet, gently pat it dry and let it dry well. Then comb it calmly, without pulling on tangled sections.
If it's completely soaked, spend a little more time drying it. With permanently attached extensions, don't skip the attachment area – it also needs to be dried well.
And if you wear clip-in hair and the forecast shows heavy rain, you can always simply leave it for another day.
Autumn is not a problem for extensions
Extensions can be worn comfortably in autumn too. The season simply requires a little more attention to things we often neglect in summer – humidity, friction, drying and tangling.
You don't need to completely change the way you care for your hair. It's enough not to leave it wet, not to pull when combing, and to pay attention to the areas that most often rub against clothes.
With clip-in hair, you have the added freedom of putting it in according to the weather and the occasion. With permanently attached extensions, proper application and regular maintenance remain the foundation of a good result.
